Hypervalent iodine(III) reagents are important functional group-transfer reagents and have been widely used in synthetic chemistry, because of their fertile reactivities, excellent chemoselectivities, mild reaction conditions, and environmental benign characteristics. Therefore, the development of new hypervalent iodine(III) reagents and new reactions promoted by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents is of great significance. Trifluoromethylthio group (–SCF3) is an important fluorinated group, which shows promise for the development of drugs and agrochemicals. We report the design and synthesis of the first N-acetylbenziodazolone-based hypervalent trifluoromethylthio-iodine(III) reagent (TFTI) whose structure and properties have been carefully investigated. We also report the reactivities of TFTI, including: (1) electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolation of nucleophiles; (2) dehydroxy-trifluoromethylthiolation of alcohols in combination with N-heterocyclic carbene; (3) direct trifluoromethylthiolation of terminal alkynes.
